Gulf Coast Aero is a FAA part 61 flight school located at North Houston Airport (9X1) a small General Aviation airport in Porter, Texas. We are a non-towered airport, which means no long taxi times or waiting on ATC instructions, which gives you more time to fly and learn.
Our mission is to provide quality flight instruction to students of all ages and experience level. We can take you with little to no experience, to Private Pilot Certification, Instrument through Commercial, CFI & CFII. We also provide quality tail wheel instruction and endorsements.
Our school has some of the most experienced and highly trained CFI, CFII, MEI or ATP flight instructors in all of Houston, with in excess of 26,000 hours of general aviation and major airline flight time. We also provide 107 UAV (Drone) training, as well as ground instruction, flight reviews and for those that just want to see what its like, we have discovery flights. During your discovery flight, an instructor will take you up, and show you firsthand what it is like to fly and aircraft.
Our fleet contains Cessna 150’s & 172’s both aircraft models are used the world over for flight instruction, as well as an Aeronca Champ & a J5 Cub, for Tail wheel aircrafts training and endorsements. All our aircraft are maintained by on staff Certified mechanics and inspected to the highest FAA standards. Our fleet is available for lease, with or without instructors.
Conveniently located just off SH 99 / Grand Parkway, we are 15 - 20 minutes away from Kingwood, Humble, Conroe, The Woodlands, & Spring areas.
We have been flight instructing at 9X1 since 1978 and carry full aviation insurance, for your safety and peace of mind. Whether you need primary training, or a flight review, Gulf Coast Aero can cover all aspects of your training.
Gulf Coast Aero is also authorized to provide flight instruction to international students.
ABOUT GULF COAST AERO
Our Discovery Flight typically last 60 to 90 minutes, to include 30 minutes of ground instruction, preflight checks and 30/60 minutes of flight. You will be seated in the pilot seat with an instructor to your right. You get to experience the joys of flight in a single piston engine fixed wing aircraft, taking the controls where possible and learning the basics of flying, take-off, climbing to altitude, navigation, and then returning to the airfield.

ACCELERATED 8 WEEK PRIVATE PILOT GROUND SCHOOL
Accelerated 8 week, 48-hour class covers all portions of the FAA knowledge exam. One class will be spent in the hangar learning pertinent facts about how the airplanes operate, fly, and mechanicals.
The cost for the 8-week course is $400 which includes PHAK (Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge). Classes will be held on Tuesday & Thursday nights from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at our training center.
Since we are a Part 61 flight school, we have the flexibility for you to “pay as you go“, customizing your flight training to match your finances – paying by cash, check, or credit card. For those students who are transitioning to an aviation career, TCA works with Meritize to allow individuals to finance their private pilots’ license (‘PPL‘) all the way to their commercial pilots’ license (‘CPL‘).

Josh (Taco) joined us in July 2019. He comes from Omaha, NE & previously from the cold tundra of Minnesota. Brrr. He is one of our Senior CFI's with over 1600 hrs in many different makes & models of airplanes & brings that experience into teaching. He has a passion to teach & not interested in hour building, he brings innovative & challenging techniques to help you learn, while making it fun & enjoyable.
